The altM Engineering team is responsible for converting the R&D team’s research into actionable engineering and manufacturing deliverables in order to set up production. As an Instrumentation Engineer, you will be pivotal in designing, implementing, and maintaining the instrumentation and control systems for our biomass processing units.

Responsibilities

Overview

  • Design and commission instrumentation and control systems for demo/pilot-scale biomass processing units.
  • Develop and implement control philosophies to optimize production processes.

Design Documentation

  • Develop Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and process flow diagrams (PFDs).
  • Prepare instrumentation datasheets, specifications, and loop diagrams.

Instrument Selection and Sizing

  • Select appropriate instruments for measuring flow, temperature, pressure, level, pH, and other critical parameters.
  • Perform sizing calculations for control valves, flow meters, and safety devices.

Control Systems Development

  • Design and program PLC/DCS systems for process automation.
  • Develop control logic, interlocks, and safety shutdown systems.
  • Configure Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.

Process Safety and Compliance

  • Implement safety instrumented systems (SIS) and ensure compliance with industry safety standards.
  • Prepare cause and effect diagrams, alarm rationalization, and safety interlock matrices.

Calibration and Testing

  • Establish calibration procedures and schedules for all instrumentation.
  • Conduct Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) for instrumentation systems.

Equipment & Production Engineering

  • Define instrumentation requirements for production plant design/layout.
  • Validate and characterize new instrumentation equipment for production implementation.
  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) for instrumentation-related activities.
  • Design ergonomically efficient control rooms and operator interfaces.

Coordination & Teamwork

  • Coordinate with vendors for procurement, installation, and commissioning of instrumentation systems.
  • Work closely with the R&D team to provide feedback on instrument selection and integration.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders, including R&D, finance, supply chain, and production, to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all instrumentation systems comply with safety regulations and environmental standards.
  • Maintain documentation for compliance audits and quality management systems.
  • Promote a culture of safety by participating in HAZOP studies and implementing recommended actions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or evidence of exceptional ability.
  • 5-8+ years of experience in setting up instrumentation and control systems for chemical processing, oil & gas (O&G), or biomass processing plants.
  • In-depth knowledge of instrumentation engineering principles, control system design, and industry standards.
  • Proficiency with instrumentation and control software such as AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, PLC programming languages (e.g., Ladder Logic, Function Block), and DCS configurations.
  • Extensive knowledge of hazardous area classification for process plants.
  • Experience with preparation of IO list, electrical load list, plant electrical architecture, selection of PLC cards.
  • Experience with communication protocols such as MODBUS, HART, Ethernet/IP, PROFIBUS, CAN etc.
  • Extensive experience of working with control strategies such as Cascade control, split range control, Ratio control, Selective control etc.
  • Excellent communication skills—verbal, written, and presentation—and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with vendor coordination for FAT, SAT, installation, and commissioning activities.
  • This is an onsite role and requires physical presence at the production site.
  • Ability to travel locally within India and internationally as required.
