At altM, we are building next-generation process plants that transform biomass feedstocks into high-value chemicals.

The Sr Instrumentation & Controls Engineer position at altM is not a desk-engineering role. We are looking for someone who is equally comfortable reviewing control philosophies, commissioning field instruments, troubleshooting plant upsets, validating interlocks during startup, and working alongside process, mechanical, and electrical teams to bring physically complex process systems online.

The candidate will work across the complete project lifecycle - from engineering design and EPC coordination to commissioning, startup, performance testing, and plant optimization. The ideal candidate understands how real plants behave, knows how to diagnose instrumentation and control issues in the field, and can bridge the gap between engineering intent and operational performance.

Responsibilities:

Instrumentation & Controls Engineering

  • Lead instrumentation and control engineering activities for greenfield and brownfield process plant projects.
  • Prepare Instrument Indexes, I/O Lists, Control System Architecture, SLDs, Cause & Effect Matrices, Control Philosophies, Alarm & Interlock Philosophies, and Functional Design Specifications.
  • Develop and review instrument datasheets, specifications, loop diagrams, hook-up drawings, JB layouts, and cable schedules.
  • Participate in instrument selection, sizing, and vendor package reviews.

Process Control & Automation

  • Develop control logic, PLC/DCS programming: function block and ladder programming, HMI/SCADA integration, Communication network configuration.
  • Develop and optimize control strategies for continuous and batch process operations.
  • Configure, troubleshoot, and commission PLC, DCS, SCADA, HMI, and Historian systems.
  • Implement and tune PID, cascade, ratio, selective, and advanced control strategies.
  • Support alarm rationalization, cybersecurity implementation, and control narrative development.

Electrical Integration & Commissioning

  • Interface closely with electrical teams on MCCs, VFDs, motor control schemes, and power distribution systems.
  • Lead loop checks, calibration verification, interlock testing, SATs, cause-and-effect validation, and PLC/DCS commissioning.
  • Support pre-commissioning, commissioning, startup, performance testing, and plant handover activities.
  • Coordinate with EPC contractors, vendors, and site teams to resolve technical issues.

Troubleshooting & Plant Support

  • Diagnose instrumentation, control, electrical, and automation issues affecting plant performance.
  • Troubleshoot control valves, analyzers, communication networks, PLC/DCS faults, VFDs, and startup-related issues.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement long-term reliability improvements.

Process Safety & Compliance

  • Participate in Hazardous Area Classification, HAZOP, SIL, LOPA, PSSR, and startup readiness reviews.
  • Support development and validation of SIS, ESD, and critical process safety interlocks.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable industry standards and best practices.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Instrumentation, Electronics, Electrical, Control Systems Engineering or related discipline, or evidence of exceptional achievement.
  • 8+ years of experience in chemical, petrochemical, refinery, renewable fuels, biofuels, oil & gas, or related process industries.
  • Strong EPC, commissioning, startup, and plant operations experience. Proven field troubleshooting and plant commissioning experience.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with one or more of: Siemens, Rockwell Automation, ABB, Yokogawa, Honeywell Experion, Emerson DeltaV, Schneider Electric, Batch automation systems.
  • Ability to work across design offices, construction sites, and operating plants.
  • This is an onsite role and requires physical presence during engineering, commissioning, startup, and operational support activities.
