At altM, we are building next-generation process plants that transform biomass feedstocks into high-value chemicals. As a Sr Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, reviewing, and executing mechanical systems that form the backbone of our process facilities.
This role spans the entire project lifecycle - from engineering design and vendor management to fabrication, construction, commissioning, and startup. We are looking for someone who is equally comfortable reviewing pressure vessel calculations, solving site installation challenges, coordinating with fabricators, and supporting chemical plant commissioning teams during plant startup.
The ideal candidate combines strong mechanical engineering fundamentals with hands-on experience in EPC execution in chemicals and O&G sectors, modular process plant design, and field problem-solving.
Responsibilities:
Mechanical Engineering & Design
- Lead mechanical design activities for process plant equipment and modular skid-mounted systems.
- Design and review: Pressure vessels, Heat exchangers, Storage tanks, Columns and reactors, Structural skids and modular units, Utility and process piping systems
- Perform equipment design and verification using PV Elite and applicable design codes.
- Support development of novel process equipment and custom mechanical systems.
- Review equipment datasheets, technical specifications, GA drawings, fabrication drawings, and vendor documentation.
- Collaborate with process, instrumentation, and electrical teams to ensure integrated plant design.
Piping & Plant Layout
- Review plant layouts, piping arrangements, and 3D models for constructability and maintainability.
- Develop piping material specifications and support selection piping elements
- Prepare and review piping BOQs/MTOs based on P&IDs and 3D models.
- Support piping stress, flexibility, and equipment interface reviews where required.
Vendor Management & Fabrication
- Coordinate with fabricators and equipment vendors throughout manufacturing and inspection activities.
- Review material certificates, welding records, NDT reports, hydrotest reports, and quality documentation.
- Participate in vendor inspections, FATs, and equipment acceptance activities.
- Ensure compliance with project specifications and applicable industry codes.
Construction, Commissioning & Startup
- Support site erection, equipment installation, piping works, and mechanical completion activities.
- Assist commissioning teams during pre-commissioning, startup, and performance testing.
- Resolve field engineering issues and implement practical design modifications when required.
- Develop lifting, rigging, transportation, and heavy equipment installation plans.
- Work closely with EPC contractors and site teams to ensure safe and efficient project execution.
Documentation & Engineering Systems
- Maintain engineering documentation, revision control, and as-built records.
- Track fabrication status, inspection reports, punch lists, and commissioning documentation.
- Contribute to development of engineering standards, specifications, and best practices across the organization.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or evidence of exceptional achievement.
- 5–10+ years of experience in chemical, petrochemical, oil & gas, renewable fuels, biofuels, or related process industries.
- Proven experience designing and executing skid-mounted modular process plants.
- Experience supporting fabrication, construction, commissioning, and startup activities.
- Strong working knowledge of: Pressure vessel and heat exchanger design, PV Elite and mechanical design calculations, ASME Section VIII Div. 1, ASME B16.5 and piping standards, Pipe schedules, flange ratings, fittings, and materials selection, Equipment fabrication and inspection practices, Welding and NDT requirements, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or equivalent CAD tools
- Nice-to-have: EPC project execution experience, Process plant commissioning and startup support, Renewable fuels, biomass, chemical, or specialty chemical facilities experience, Structural skid design and transportation experience, Vendor inspection and quality assurance experience.
- Ability to work across design offices, construction sites, and operating plants.
- This is an onsite role and requires physical presence during engineering reviews, fabrication inspections, construction activities, commissioning, and startup support.
